Penrith Cricket Club's Brewer Shield of 2011-12: A debut season to remember

Penrith Cricket Club | June 22, 2026

Penrith’s Brewer Shield team made a stunning entrance into the SCA Women’s Competition in their debut season, capping an undefeated campaign with two premiership shields and the prestigious Spirit of Cricket Award.

The team’s formation began in the off-season when a group of eight players and their parents met to discuss entering the competition. To gain entry, the club was required to meet several criteria, including a minimum squad of 15 with 75% of players new to grade cricket, the formation of a sub- committee to manage the team, and full support from the Grade Club covering coaching, facilities and financial backing. A business plan detailing recruitment, retention and player development policies was also required.

From the outset, the team’s goals were clear: to be competitive, play within the spirit of the game and remain united both on and off the field. The girls also committed to supporting the Grade Club socially and with ground duties — setting up nets, managing covers and keeping facilities clean. The season was split into nine rounds of T20 and nine rounds of Limited Overs (40). A bye and six washouts either side of Christmas meant Penrith Brewer went three months without play, yet they remained undefeated in the T20 competition, winning four matches and collecting seven bonus points from washouts to finish first after the preliminary rounds. With the Finals also washed out, Penrith were declared winners of the Reg Tulk T20 Shield.

The Limited Overs competition told a similar story. Penrith Brewer won six matches with two washouts, accumulating 11 bonus points to claim the Minor Premiership. The batting highlights were impressive, with several players posting scores over 50 throughout the campaign. Amy Edgar was in particularly fine form, retiring on 52* twice – against Universities and Gordon – and again on 51* in the Final against Universities. Captain Holly Wilson contributed a vital 50* against Universities, while Mikayla Hinkley posted 51* against Bankstown Sports and 50* in the Final. Jacqueline-Marie Klincke also retired on 50* against Parramatta-Blacktown.

In the Limited Overs Semi-final at Bill Ball, Penrith dismissed fourth-placed Campbelltown-Camden for just 46, chasing the target down at 3/47 off only 12 overs. The Grand Final against second-placed Universities, also at Bill Ball, produced a dominant performance. Sent in to bat, Penrith accelerated from the 25-over mark to post 4/186 off 40 overs, with Amy Edgar (51*) and Mikayla Hinkley (50*) both retiring. The bowlers then skittled Universities for just 28, with all six bowlers taking wickets. Amy and Mikayla were named joint Players of the Final.

At the SCAWC Premiers dinner, Captain Holly Wilson accepted the two Premiership shields on behalf of the team. Emma Felsch claimed the Bowling Average and Aggregate award with 20 wickets @ 3.25, while Mikayla Hinkley took out the Batting Average with 184 runs @ 92.

The proudest moment of the evening, however, came when Penrith were announced as the Spirit of Cricket Award-winners – a remarkable achievement for a team in its first season of premier cricket and a testament to the culture the players, coaches and supporters had built both on and off the field.

Individual representative honours across the season were also notable:

  • NSW U/15: Amy Edgar, Samantha Arnold
  • ACT U/15: Tilly Power
  • NSW ALL Schools: Emma Felsch
  • Emerging Breakers: Amy Edgar, Samantha Arnold, Mikayla Hinkley, Danielle Armstrong, Dorothy Fiulemi, Jacqueline-Marie Klincke, Rhiannon McCooey, Holly Wilson, Tilly Power, Jessica Powyer
