To win a competition after using 32 players throughout the season is a testament to the strength of the club's junior base and is a great sign for the club in the years ahead. With the club having a large number of players unavailable at times during the year, the Metro boys never really had the same team two games in a row. Some weeks, the side had 6 or 7 new players in it.
There were some outstanding performances during the year including some big hundred’s. While some may say they were scored against weak opposition, the boys were still impressive in the way they went about scoring the runs.
There is no doubt however, that they saved their best performances for the business end of the season. Playing Eastern Suburbs in the first semi final, we went down in a game that was there to be won. It was a game that we definitely lost as opposed to the opposition winning it. The boys showed a lot of character to then come back in the major Semi to beat Gordon, a side who had towelled us up in our previous two matches against each other. After scoring only 91 in our first innings, the boys showed a lot of spirit and toughness to fight back and roll Gordon for 60 odd. They then negotiated a tough period of play batting in the last hour in poor light and with plenty of pressure from the opposition, to see out the days play with a lead of 50-60 runs going into day 2. Day 2 saw a couple of strong partnerships under pressure to take the game away from Gordon and a take us to a Grand Final berth against Uni of NSW.
Again a couple of strong partnerships early in the innings in the Grand Final set the game up for us. With 230 on the board, it was ours to lose and the boys didn’t disappoint taking out the Grand Final. In those last two games, every player played a role in both victories. Whether it was a good knock under pressure, taking a crucial wicket or taking a vital catch, each played their role. The highlight for me was watching the boys develop during the year, putting the team before themselves, thinking about their cricket and the role they had to play and playing tough cricket winning the tight games when they had to be won.
To the guys who asked me to captain the metro side this season, thankyou. It was without a doubt my most enjoyable season of cricket and I hope that I have helped the boys develop their cricket in some way. To the parents also who were there all season helping out with covers, scoring, lunches, etc, a big thankyou to you as well. To the boys who I played with during the year, thankyou for an enjoyable season and good luck with wherever your cricket takes you.
