The Colours of the Summer Cats - Penrith Cricket Club
Penrith Cricket Club | March 24, 2026

For its first 17 seasons (1973-74 to 1989-90), Penrith Cricket Club’s colours were brown and white, following the Panthers Rugby League.
In 1991, the Panthers Rugby League team changed its colours, thus consigning to the dustbin of sporting history the term ‘Chocolate Soldiers’, a put-down used by inner city clubs. The Panthers would now wear jerseys of black, with green and red piping, and a splash of yellow, earning another nickname – the ‘Liquorice Allsorts’.
Penrith Cricket Club’s long-term links to the Rugby League Club via sponsorship and mateship led to much clubhouse debate among the players and the Committee as to whether the Cricket Club should also change its colours. Captains were requested to conduct a vote, and the result was largely in favour of a change to black.

The Committee produced a cap divided into eighths of black, green, white, yellow and red. The design generated much mirth among opponents of the change, one of whom remarked, ‘All it needs is one of those little spinning propellers on top like you see characters wearing in the comics’. This particular design lasted only one season.
Although the design of the Club’s one-day playing shirts has changed over the seasons since, its colours have remained proudly black with accents of green, red and yellow. In 2021-22, the Club’s Women’s squad added a pink accent to the traditional Panther black, and now the two squads, Men’s and Women’s, wear a shared design in two different colourways.
