My Darling Penrith Cricket Club - Michael Wholohan

Penrith Cricket Club | October 10, 2025

As we look back on our 50th anniversary, we look at the poem created by Michael Wholohan for our 50th anniversary.

My Darling

Penrith Cricket Club

The mighty Penrith Cricket Club has made it to 50 years.

Half a century of matches, of blood, of sweat and tears.

Thousands of games of cricket and competitions won.

We’ve produced some internationals and we’ve had a lot of fun.

So the Nepean District Cricket Club was formed in ’73,

with a handful of local legends,

under the watchful eye of JB.

An eclectic mix of talent, FJ Carroll to open the stick.

And tearaway Bobby Morris who they reckon was pretty quick.

Thrust into competition, against some of Sydney’s best,

How would this team fair?

Those cowboys from the west.

The first five years were hard,

Sometimes they would prevail,

But they always played tough cricket,

And enjoyed an after match ale.

Nepean soon became Penrith, things were on the up & up.

And within the blink of an eye, they’d claimed the Belvidere Cup.

An influx of prodigious talent, Andrews, Radanovic and Small.

And of course the great allrounder, the one and only Ken Hall.

Fast forward another four years, another first grade premiership win.

That “one hit wonders “name tag, you can throw that one in the bin.

Then a premiership drought of 36 years,

They thought we’d hit the skids.

Then came that match winning innings,

From the larrikin, they call Lids.

So half a ton of memories is the main reason why we’re here,

To relive past outright victories and to share the odd cold beer.

So my darling Penrith Cricket Club, tonight we celebrate you.

We thank you for what you’ve done for us, and the things you’ve enabled us to do.

So it’s certainly P for Penrith, and it’s certainly P for Pride,

And I think there’s one thing you’ll all agree on,

It’s been one hell of a ride.
