Get to learn about young wicket-keeper Ray Dent, who made his return for Penrith this year, who was also named the Kerkham Wicket-Keeper of the year for 2024/25.
What year were you born?
2005
Tell us about your cricket journey.
I started my junior career playing for Glenmore Park in (U8’s), where I played 8 seasons for the Redbacks. In (U15’s) I then started my senior career for Glenmore park playing alongside my dad and uncle. I then moved to Panthers cricket club to continue playing seniors with my dad and uncle. During this time I also played representative cricket for the Penrith Junior Cricket Association from U12’s to U15’s and U17’s where I was given the privilege to captain in my final junior rep season. I also represented Penrith in various cricket carnivals including Ballina, Newcastle, Orange and Canberra. I made my Grade debut for Penrith on the 13th of November in 2021 against Gordon in the Metro cup. This is now my third year of Grade cricket with the club after missing last year to an acl reconstruction. I had surgery in February and was cleared to return halfway through this season in November and enjoyed every second of it with the club.
If you can share with our readers how you would describe yourself as a cricketer?
I would describe myself as a very keen, vocal wicket keeper and top order batsmen.
What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?
The thing I enjoy most about playing cricket is the competitiveness of the game and the battle between the opposition.
What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?
My most memorable moment in cricket would have to be when I won my last junior season for the Redbacks captaining my side to a grand final win, while also winning my first senior cricket comp for Panthers cricket club with my dad and uncle on the same day. This was a very special memorable moment for me to share with my dad and uncle as not many people can say they won two grand finals in one day and one of them playing alongside your dad and uncle.
Who’s your favourite all-time cricketer?
Mitchell Johnson: Fearless, intimating and quick.
Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?
The best innings I’ve seen first hand would have to be Brett Newman’s 129* against St George chasing 242 in a quarter final batting on Sunday. He came to the crease at the 27th over when we were 3-41. He then demonstrated true determination, patience, experience and composure to dominate the other team without giving them a chance of getting him out. After great patience, he then continued showcasing a true masterclass hitting them all over the park with ease. Not only did he bring up a well deserved century but he also went on to win the game on the final ball to guarantee a spot in the semi final for our team.
Who are the two players you’ve come to admire most in your club in terms of skills and competitive spirit?
Brett Newman: One of the best captain's I’ve played for, a very smart and attacking captain which I admire, he also backs and supports his players on and off the field. A phenomenal batsmen that I enjoy batting with and makes it look easy, he also reads the game like an open book and brings that competitive edge. I’ve learnt so much from him and his support is also a big part of my development as a cricketer.
Lachlan Hood: One of the most hard working blokes at training you will see, always putting in the work to become a better cricketer whether that be his batting, bowling, fielding or fitness. His work ethic inspires me to work harder each training session.
What are the two attributes you like to see in a captain and leader?
Attacking mindset that leads from the front and supports their players.
Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?
Limp Bizkit, Ocean alley, Eagles, South Summit, Queen, The Rions. Just to name a few.

Who’s the king of selfies at your club?
The selfie king of the club would have to be Jimmy Lennox, definitely has potential to have a career as a social media influencer.
Favourite location, city or country as a holiday destination?
Jervis Bay, The most beautiful beaches I’ve seen.
If working or going to Uni what do you do?
I’m currently in my second year of University studying a Bachelors of Health and Physical Education (Pathways to Teaching Secondary). I also work part time at Hungry Jacks.
Who’s been the biggest influence on your career so far?
Definitely my mum and dad. They have both played a massive role in not only my career but also shaping the person I am, with mum always supporting me and believing in me no matter what and pushing me to be better. While Dad spent endless hours developing and improving my cricket skills and passion for the game, without my dad I wouldn't be the cricketer I am today. Both of my parents have sacrificed massively for me to become the person I am today, which I am forever grateful for.
Where do you find inspiration that gets you through challenging times?
I find inspiration by reflecting on my past and seeing how far I’ve come to where I was. Recognising the personal growth I’ve achieved through each challenging time motivates me to keep pushing forward and overcome each challenging time.

What do you like to do to relax outside cricket?
I enjoy running and going to the gym. I also enjoy hanging out with my mates.
