Howitt debuted for the "Stags" in 1989, initiating a playing career that extended all the way to 2022. He came through the club's junior development ranks, playing in the Green Shield competition alongside several future first-grade players. He played second grade for much of his career, but is the proud owner of first grade cap #468.
