Howitt debuted for the "Stags" in 1989, initiating a playing career that extended all the way to 2022. He came through the club's junior development ranks, playing in the Green Shield competition alongside several future first-grade players. He played second grade for much of his career, but is the proud owner of first grade cap #468. Known for his gritty all-round capabilities and tactical acumen, his statistical footprint puts him among the top historical performers in the history of the club:

This perpetual trophy is presented annually to the club's Second Grade Player of the Year, a fitting tribute to a player who valued grade transition, mentorship, and excellence across all levels of premier cricket.
