Career Report: Steve Colley

Gordon District Cricket Club | June 25, 2026

Tenure: 2006 – 2020

Primary Role: Top-Order Batsman / First Grade Captain

Steve Colley is widely regarded as one of the finest modern-era batsmen and leaders to wear the baggy red and green of the Stags. Over a highly decorated 12-season senior career at Gordon, Colley developed from a prolific junior academy product into an elite First Grade captain and representative player.

By the time he announced his retirement in May 2020, Colley had cemented his status as a club legend, sitting inside the top five all-time run-scorers in Gordon's First Grade history. Colley’s statistical record reflects immense consistency, regularly averaging over 600 runs per season across his decade-plus of service.

First Grade Legacy

Colley was the linchpin of the Gordon batting order for a generation. His final first grade records place him in elite historical company. Ranked 5th for most career runs scored in First Grade for the Stags. He sits directly behind club greats Sid Carroll, Charlie Macartney, James Packman, and Jack Potter, having famously passed Marshall Rosen (5,936 runs) late in his career.

  • Innings: 200
  • First Grade Runs: 5,968
  • Batting Average: 29.94

 Representative Honors & Highlights

Colley’s technical prowess at Chatswood Oval quickly drew the attention of state selectors, leading to a prominent pathway through the Cricket NSW system:

  • NSW Under-19s: Named to the state U19 team alongside future Australian Test stars Josh Hazlewood, Adam Coyte, Sean Abbott, and Nick Maddinson.
  • Futures League: Represented the NSW Under-23 Futures League team on seven occasions, highlighted by a brilliant century against South Australia in Adelaide.

Leadership

Colley was as much defined by his on-field leadership and tactical execution as he was by his batting aggregate. He captained the First Grade side for four highly successful seasons, notably leading the team to a Minor Premiership share during the 2016/17 season. He was heavily praised by the club executive for fostering a highly resilient, unified dressing room culture.

Record Partnerships

Colley commands two major milestone partnerships in the Gordon record books:

  • 2nd Wicket (2nd Grade): A mammoth 284-run stand alongside frequent batting partner Harry Evans.
  • 2nd Wicket (Poidevin-Gray): A 231-run stand with Reece Bombas against Northern Districts in 2008.

Retirement and Legacy

Colley retired in May 2020 as part of a defining generational exit, stepping away alongside fellow long-term top-order heavyweights Harry Evans and Cameron Eccles. His journey from an 11-year-old Green Shield representative to a premier First Grade captain remains the gold standard blueprint for the Gordon Cricket Academy.
