Steve Colley: A Gordon Cricket Club Journey

Gordon District Cricket Club | February 05, 2026

Steve Colley's connection with Gordon Cricket Club stretched across sixteen seasons, beginning with his Green Shield introduction in 2006 and concluding in 2022. Throughout this period, he accumulated 7,513 runs while demonstrating the values that Gordon traditionally seeks in its players.

His initial season in Green Shield yielded 260 runs at an average of 43, complemented by eight wickets bowling off spin. This early form led to his appointment as captain of the SCA Combined Green Shield First XI, marking him as a player of promise.

Like many young cricketers, Steve experienced the challenges of establishing himself at higher levels. His second season tested his determination, but he responded with performances that confirmed his place in the club's future plans.

The 2009-10 season proved pivotal. An innings of 164 in Second Grade demonstrated his maturing technique, while a subsequent 70 on debut in the T20 format showed his adaptability. Cricket NSW took notice, selecting him for the NSW Under-19 squad where he played alongside several future professionals including Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, and Jordan Silk.

Among his many notable performances, one stands apart. Playing against Western Suburbs on January 31, 2015, Steve compiled 76 runs in conditions that demanded technical excellence. The match attracted significant attention due to the presence of Australian captain Michael Clarke, who was using the game as preparation for his return from injury. While Clarke's appearance dominated public interest, Steve's innings drew admiration from those present for its technical soundness and tactical awareness.

Upon his dismissal, Clarke acknowledged the quality of Steve's batting, commenting on the discipline and structure of the innings. Such recognition from an international captain carried particular significance.

Productive partnerships featured prominently in Steve's career. His second-wicket stand of 284 with Harry Evans in Second Grade, and a 233-run partnership with Reece Bombas in Poidevin-Gray, both established club records that highlighted his capacity for sustained concentration and run accumulation.

Consistency characterized most of Steve's career. Apart from a difficult 2012-13 season, he regularly exceeded 600 runs across eleven separate campaigns. His final tally included eight centuries (four in First Grade) and 51 half-centuries, contributions that frequently provided the platform for team success.

His sixteen-year association with Gordon represented the kind of sustained commitment that clubs value—a player who developed through the grades, performed reliably across formats, and contributed meaningfully to team objectives season after season.
