TAJ'S DOG DAY AFTERNOON

Gordon District Cricket Club | January 08, 2026

Starting out on your umpiring career can be somewhat daunting, with numerous challenges to overcome as you learn your skills. Debuting in Premier Cricket adds to the anxiety, with the players rightly having high expectations, so dealing with all of these as an 18-year-old can be somewhat stressful. First-season umpire Taj Nicholson has accepted the challenge and is settling in well, meeting what is thrown his way impressively, although some encounters have not exactly been planned.

Mosman’s Rawson Oval was the venue for the T20 double headers at the start of the season, fifth grade on first, followed by fourth grade, as the home side took on St George. Nothing especially extraordinary in the first match, which proceeded without a hitch, despite a couple of lost balls dispatched into the undergrowth extending down to the harbour.

Time for a lunch break between games, or so he thought….. The return to the dressing room found a lunchbox without lid and, more disappointingly, without lunch therein. Taj was at first perplexed, then frustrated, as thoughts of his well-prepared feast instantly evaporated. Anguished cries of “someone stole my lunch” were echoing around the cavernous depths of the pavilion when a clue was revealed. A stray mutt had been spotted earlier lurking around, on the hunt for a reward, which was apparently located in the umpires’ room. Lucky for the canine, not so for Taj.

A partner’s offer to share his sandwich was politely declined, a phone call to Uber Eats delivering a burger and chips in time before the second match duties were required. It’s easy to imagine Taj responding to: “What happened at cricket today?” with “The tail wagged just before lunch.” True, and certainly in the literal sense.

Taj played the past couple of seasons bowling left-arm orthodox spin for the Stags. In only half a season of umpiring, he has already moved up from 5th Panel to 4th Panel. Tim observed “Taj shows much promise and is super keen to progress.”
