Marshall Rosen Reflects on Chatswood Oval

Gordon District Cricket Club | November 15, 2025

Marshall Rosen – former NSW batsman with 7028 runs for the club in all grades at an average of 34.62, including 14 centuries. At the bowing crease his 180 wickets at 19.30 gave him all-round status which was further acknowledged when one considers he kept in the absence of Brian Taber, effecting 92 dismissals, 59 catches and 33 stumpings in 18 seasons at the club. A Life Member who gave much on and off the field for his club, joining the Committee and being a delegate to Cricket NSW for 21 years, Director of Cricket NSW for 13 years and Chair of CNSW Cricket Committee. Marshall played rugby union for the Chatswood Rugby Club and was a ballboy for the Gordon RUFC for many years. The Rosen story is a family one with brothers Ellis and Robert also playing for the Gordon DCC.

"I was only eight when I first became associated with the Gordon DCC. My brothers were the reason as we were asked to work the scoreboard at Chatswood Oval. It was, and still is, on the far side of the ground, opposite the Trumper Pavilion. In those early days it was operate the scoreboard, collect cricket autographs and get paid 2/- by one of the Gordon officials for looking after the scoreboard all day. It was tiring but I enjoyed it. Aged 10, I played in a match for the Colts team that played A grade in the Willoughby-Ku-ring-gai Cricket Association. That was the commencement of my playing days for the club, some of the happiest years of my life with some great friendships made along the way, many still existing today.

What I enjoyed about Gordon was being involved and meeting some of the older players. They relived stories from players of earlier years, Macartney, Hynes, Oldfield and Kellaway. Every now and then Trumper would come into a story. He was there larger than life, the Trumper Pavilion bearing his name."
