Brett Rosen - a renowned Gordon wicket keeper batsman

Gordon District Cricket Club | October 26, 2025

While the name Rosen has been synonymous with the Gordon District Cricket Club since the arrival of a young batsman in the 1960’s by the name of Marshall Rosen, who went on to score 5,936 First Grade Runs and become a legendary administrator for both the club and for the NSWCA, his son Brett also had an exceptional career with the Gordon club.

Brett, a specialist wicket keeper and fine middle order First Grade and high order lower grade batsman began his grade career in 1997-98 with two innings of 120* and 83 in Fifth Grade. After 15 seasons he retired as Second Grade Captain after the 2013-14 season when he captained the team and scored 469 runs with a high score of 105 not out.

Brett’s emergence as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the early 2000’s added another highlight to the Gordon Cricket Academy’s development program. After the grim possibility of the club disappearing around 2000, Brett was part of the 2001-02 Third Grade victory when he hit the winning runs chasing Mosman's 300-plus total in the final at Killara, in front of a big crowd, which proved a huge turning point for Gordon.

It was his excellent wicket keeping that was the highlight of his career, finishing third on the Gordon list of most wicketkeeping dismissals in all grades with 293 (264 catches, 29 stumpings). Only Brian Taber (350) and Phil Emery (305) are ahead of him. When you consider the number of exceptional keepers that have represented Gordon this is a fine performance.

Brett had three full seasons in First Grade from 2004-05 to 2006-07 and in that third year set a new First Grade record for most dismissals (46) in a season (44 catches, 2 stumpings), comfortably breaking the previous figure of 41 shared by Bob Thomas and Michael Cox. Unfortunately for Brett, Iain Beverley exceeded that total, by only 1 in 2008-09.

Brett’s best all round season was in 2008-09 when he scored 692 runs at 38.44 (1 century, 4 fifties) and 33 wicketkeeping dismissals (25 catches and 8 stumpings) in Third Grade. With another 8 runs and 4 dismissals in Second Grade, his season totals were 700 runs at 35.00 and 37 wicketkeeping dismissals. When he scored 102 in the Third Grade semi-final, his celebration revealed the importance he held for helping his team to make the final, which they went on to win.

In addition to his wicket keeping dismissals, Brett scored 4,564 runs at 23.65 with three centuries over his career. He also captained the Second Grade side for several seasons and was renowned for his energetic keeping when he formed a dynamic partnership with Ed Howitt in Third Grade.

Brett has remained involved with the club and has been appointed for another season in 2025-26 as the grade team’s wicket keeping coach. There is no doubt they are in very good hands.
