Lloyd Wilson: Reflections on Playing for Gordon
Gordon District Cricket Club | October 05, 2025

EDITORS NOTE: Lloyd opened the batting for our First Grade team in the 1960s.
I turned up for early season practice (first Saturday in September in those days) at Chatswood Oval, for the 1967-68 season. I hadn`t played at all the previous season, so was looking to be graded maybe at Thirds or Seconds. In those days, practice consisted of waiting your turn to spend, say, five or so minutes batting in the nets. No fielding practice, just grouped at the bowling end of the nets, arms folded, chatting to other players. Then finish at 3pm and off to the Rugby Club across the road to watch the rugby grand final. At the end of three Saturday practices, Dick (Roley) Guy approached me with news that I was in the First XI to play Northern District the next Saturday at Waitara Oval!
My best memories of Chatswood Oval and Trumper Pavilion were many renditions of the Gordon song in the dressing-room, with the opposition and sometimes even umpire Fred Tilley – he loved it! Also, many nights at committee and selection meetings in the pavilion.
No First Grade century for me at the oval in my short time with Gordon. The best, a 99 bowled by somebody called H Anderson. So many great memories, I only regret I should have played for Gordon earlier in my career.
