Fergus Munro: Reflections on Playing for Gordon
Gordon District Cricket Club | October 05, 2025

EDITORS NOTE: Fergus Munro first played for Gordon in Green Shield 1955-56 and PoidevinGray Shield 1956-58. He then played for Sydney University before returning to Gordon for the 1964-65 season in First Grade then moving to London where he played for Hampstead CC for many seasons.
My first recollection of Chatswood Oval and Trumper Pavilion was in about 1954 when I was selected to play in Gordon’s AW Green Shield side, managed by Ray Jones, and ‘required to practice there’. The Trumper Pavilion was our base, and we were encouraged to follow in the footsteps of Victor Trumper, Charlie Macartney, Charlie Kellaway and other players who had worn the Gordon DCC cap. This must have paid off because we were joint premiers in 1955-56. People I remember at that time included Harry Crow, Basil Sheidow, Col Ashton, Colin Alderdice and many others.
I then left Gordon to play cricket for The Scots College and Sydney University from where I was selected for NSW Colts for one season. I then returned to Gordon for one season in 1964-65 and was reunited with the Trumper Pavilion. In my first game back, I scored a century against Canterbury-Bankstown as it was known then. That Gordon team included Dick Guy and Brian Taber who went on to play for New South Wales and Australia respectively. We were captained by the legendary Sid Carroll, described as the best opening batsman never to play for Australia. I remember his last century for Gordon when one of his knees had ceased to function and he had to rely on pivoting on his one working knee and could barely run between wickets. But how we all cheered when he reached 100 again!
The Trumper Pavilion was host to all these events, not to mention the Gordon rugby team which I watched from the Pavilion on many occasions.
