Gordon District Cricket Club - A.W. Green Shield Report for the 2000-2001 Season
Gordon District Cricket Club | August 12, 2025

The Green Shield team performed extremely well considering limited preparation and the young age of most of the boys. Only five team members were U/16, six boys are still eligible next season and the remaining three are eligible for the next two seasons.

Ben Hutchinson's role as Coach was outstanding with such a young side. The players enjoyed his passion for the game. They were constantly engrossed with his talks about commitment and dedication required to perform at your very best. They also relished his humour at warm ups, drinks, change of innings or whenever he spoke.
A special thanks should go to Anthony ("Pick") Sherman (pictured) who filled in as coach for the last game when Hutcho had commitments with Poidevin Gray. This presence was extremely valued.
The boys would also like to thank the P.G. Team who, at our end-of-season barbecue, performed the Gordon Club Song both physically and vocally to the parents, players and those residents who lived within a one kilometer radius of Chatswood Oval.
Our Assistant Coach/Manager Peter Stott deserves plenty of praise for his efforts during the season. Peter gave up his time to help Hutcho with coaching and motivation. The team would not have done as well without his input. So on behalf of the boys, Peter, we thank you.
The experience gained this year for those younger players should be invaluable and they will surely excel in coming years.
For the five U/16 players, good luck in 2001/2002 if you are entering into Grade for Gordon. I am sure you will do the Club proud and perform very well.
Some outstanding performances were from Matthew Van Gestel who scored 263 runs with an average of 44. He gained selection in the Combined Green Shield 2nd Xl and was asked to trial for the NSW U/17 City Squad.
Bilal Qureshi scored 226 runs and claimed 13 wickets with his medium pacers and was extremely unlucky not to make the Combined Green Shield also. Another player who would have gone close was Dean Steingold who captured 11 wickets behind the stumps and scored 169 runs.
Finally, I would like to thank all the parents who helped with the scoring, covers, photos etc and to the mums who made the delicious afternoon teas. With the commitment shown not only from the players but also the parents we had an extremely successful and enjoyable season. Good luck to those eligible players next season.
