Michael Cant - Gordon District Cricket Club Team of the 1990s

Gordon District Cricket Club | May 19, 2025

I have selected my best Gordon team from players I played with in the 1990s. The team has been selected primarily on performances for Gordon. We had some fantastic players in that era and won 2 premierships. Picking the team has brought back some great memories.

1. Greg Hayne. Imposing opening bat whose record in Sydney premier cricket is phenomenal. Also a superb pair of hands.

2. Paul McLean. Selected out of position to open the batting but would have done well in this spot. One of the best exponents of the hook and pull shot.

3. Phil Emery - exceptional glove man, quality batsman and a great team mate. His record and longevity for Gordon and NSW says everything.

4. Mark O’Neill - classy batsman and very capable leg spinner. Very influential in the emergence of the successful Gordon teams in late 80s / early 90s.

5. Adam Gilchrist - a big part of our premiership winning teams as a teenager. The rest is history. A privilege to have played with one of the greats of the game.

6. Jon Moss. Started as a bat and become a genuine allrounder after taking 8 wickets the first time he bowled in 1st grade. Played his best cricket after leaving Gordon, and enjoyed a successful career with Victoria.

7. Ross Toohey. A great competitor with both bat and ball. Took a while to find his feet in 1st grade but become a vital part of the team in the 1990s.

8. Matt Nicholson. An outstanding quick and handy batsman who moved to WA to pursue a 1st class career before returning to NSW and Gordon. A excellent leader who captained NSW and Gordon with distinction.

9. Kurt Morrison. Underrated cricketer who took a lot of wickets bowling his off-spin and was a dangerous lower order batsman.

10. Richard Dixon. A very handy outswing bowler who was a regular wicket taker.

11. Richard Stobo. A big hearted fast bowler who bowled an excellent line and could bowl for long spells. In my view the MVP in what was some great teams in late 80s, early 90s. Also a fantastic catcher especially of his own bowling.

Other notable mentions are Steve Day, Kevin Roberts, John Davison and Warwick Aldlam, all of who could easily have made the team. Steve led the Gordon revival in the late 80s while Kev, Davo and Wick started at Gordon as young guns and went on to have very successful careers at other clubs or interstate.
