This is an extract from the PG team report in the annual report:
Season 2015-16 turned out to be a hugely successful one for the PGs squad, winning 8 of their 9 games and culminating in a Final win over neighbours St George at GMO. This group of young men were ably led by Jamie Brown on the field and special mention must go to Jarryd Biviano and Dan Fallins for their support in helping the whole group come together off the field and create a great team culture and bond. This was supported by all the players and was a major contributing factor to the team success and winning the shield.
To Tom Iceton (for the last-minute phone call before the first game) and the Committee who afforded me the opportunity to be involved with this fine group of young men, thank you.
Here is how the season unfolded:
Round 1 vs UNSW Win by 53 runs
Jamie won the toss and batted, a total off 9/222 was posted, led by Riley Ayre 63, Tom Doyle 44 and Kyle Brockley 45. With the ball we bowled UNSW out for 169 with all the bowlers getting wickets. The best being two of the team’s spin quartet, Devlin Malone 3-40 and Jamie Brown 2-21.
Round 2 vs Sydney Loss by 5 wkts
This was the first and only loss the team had. Again Jamie won the toss and batted first, where we struggled to get 200, eventually being all out 203 from 49.4 overs. Riley Ayre top scored with 77 and Dan Fallins with 45 were the backbone of our innings. Sydney got the runs five wickets down and the pick of our bowlers was Devlin Malone with 3-44.
Round 3 vs Manly Win by 115 runs
This game saw us bounce back from the last round with a good batting effort where most of the batting group chipped in. After Jamie won his third toss, we batted with Riley Ayre again top scoring with 62, Jamie Brown 55 and Dan Fallins 55. The bowling group then bowled out Manly in 38.2 overs with our spinners cleaning up. Devlin Malone leading the way with 3-17, Dan Fallins 3-29 and Jamie Brown 2-28.
Round 4 vs Gordon Win by 5 wkts & a bonus point
Jamie’s run of winning the toss stopped this game and we headed out to restrict Gordon to a reasonable total. Well we did that and more, bowling them out for 131 in 29.3 overs. Dan Fallins 3-35 and Jayden Brown 2-30 were our chief destroyers. Fielding was good as we also picked up 3 run outs. Needing 132 with the bat to win, Dan Fallins 41 and Jarryd Biviano 25 got us off to a flyer. Jamie Brown 28 saw us reach the total in 25.1 overs and gain a bonus point.
Round 5 vs Randwick Petersham Win by 6 wkts
Again set the task of bowling first the lads again delivered with Kyle and Jayden taking an early wicket each set the tone so our spinners could take control, restricting and bowling Randwick out for 160 in 45.1 overs. Best of the bowlers were Dan Fallins 4-43, Riley Ayre 2-35 and Kyle Brockley 2-8. Chasing 161 to win we had contributions from everyone in the top order, led by skipper Jamie Brown with 60, Dan Fallins 41, Tom Doyle 31 and Jarryd Biviano 20 and passed the total in 32.2 overs.
Round 6 vs Northern District Win by 70 runs
Northern District decided to send us in at GMO at their peril. We started off well with Jarryd Biviano compiling 53, but that was when it became the Tom Doyle show. Tom amassed a beautiful 180 with 20 fours and 7 sixes, scoring to all parts of GMO at will. His innings allowed the team to be 6/318 after 50 overs. NDs after losing an early wicket were never in the hunt, being bowled out for 248 as our spinners took control led by Dan Fallins 4-49 and Devlin Malone 2-54.
QF vs Campbelltown-Camden Win by 75 runs
Jamie got back to winning the toss and batting and led by example with a finely crafted 113 with 11 fours. He was ably supported by Riley Ayre 37 and Kyle Brockley 38, to allow the team to score 7/247 off our 50 overs. A couple of early wickets, one each to Jayden and Kyle, again allowed for our spinners to control the game. Devlin Malone 4-22 was the pick and supported by Riley Ayre with 2-18 allowed us to roll them for 172 and progress to the semi-final.
SF vs Penrith Win by 7 Wkts
Penrith won the toss and elected to bat and after losing two early wickets compiled 7/227 after the 50 overs. Best with ball for us were Dan Fallins 2-33 and Kyle Brockley 2-47, while Riley and Jayden bowled tight spells. After losing Bivi early, Dan Fallins 49 and Tom Doyle 59 set about setting a platform. Jamie Brown 65 not out and Riley Ayre 33 not out brought the bacon home to finish 3/231 and a place in the Final.
Final vs St George Win by 3 Wkts
St George batted first and got away from us to 70 without loss until we forced a runout. That break through allow for our first grade spin bowling trio to get the momentum back our way. Dan Fallins 4-28, Devlin Malone 3-21 and Riley Ayre 2-44 bowled out St George for 179. This was always going to be a tough chase in a Final. That’s how it turned out, at one stage being 4/17 and our backs to the wall. Step in our skipper Jamie Brown for the fight with a well complied 72, who was supported by Luke Hawksworth 32. When Luke was out at 103 and Jamie at 132 there was still a little work to be done. James Arnold 13, Kyle Brockley 23 not out & Sibby Khan 13 not out saw it home for a great win. Congratulations to Jamie Brown for being named Player of the Final and receiving the Shane Lee Medal.
Jamie Brown 410 and Tom Doyle 337 were the leading runs scorers across the PGs competition and were closely followed by Riley Ayre 277 and Dan Fallins 266. Dan Fallins was the competition’s leading wicket taker with 22, closely followed by Devlin Malone 19.
I would like to congratulate all the lads involved in this team, not only for their outstanding contribution and achievement in winning the competition but for also supporting and allowing me the opportunity to be involved and take that ride with you all.
