Jason Holley was a dynamic batsman when he got going!
Sutherland District Cricket Club | April 21, 2025
John Benaud presents the Benaud Medal to Jason Holley after the 1997-98 1st Grade Final.
Jason Holley scored 11 centuries for Sutherland, plus a very important 96. All of them were exciting innings, as described in annual reports:
199 in 3rd Grade – 1992-93 (Brett Johnson captain – a man of few words)
On an individual level, there were many performances worthy of special mention. Without a doubt, the most memorable were:

101* in 2nd Grade – 1993-94 (Linton Ball captain)
Round 3 Tuite and O’Brien got us off to a good start, but it was Jason Holley who did most of the damage. Jason blasted 101 not out to enable us to declare at 7/262. The highlight of his innings was when Waverley took the second new ball, only to see it hit the uprights at Caringbah De La Salle!

150 in Poidevin-Gray Shield – 1993-94 (Linton Ball captain)
No doubt the biggest highlight of the season came during the match against Bankstown. Sutherland’s innings of 7/256 included a record-breaking 6th wicket partnership (120) with Linton Ball scoring 36. I was well-supported by Jason Holley, who tore the heart out of the Bankstown attack, hitting 150 off 170 balls – a new highest score for Sutherland in the P-G competition. Jason’s innings included 22 fours and 3 sixes and was an absolute pleasure to witness, particularly from the opposite end dodging the thunderbolts being released from his bat.

96 in 1st Grade Final – 1997-98 (Jason Young captain)
We won the vital toss and proceeded to put all doubters of our batting line-up at ease, as we reached 7/351 at stumps. The captain led from the front by returning to the important number three position and making a fine 80, along the way guiding young Jaquesy to a well-compiled 69. However, undoubtedly the innings of the final was played by Jay Holley. Coming in at 4/177, he departed 123 runs later with the score on 6/300, having pulverised the North Sydney attack for 96 runs. The stats were remarkable – 111 minutes, 88 balls, 2 sixes and 13 fours. Jason Packer came in at 5/258 with Jay on 57. When Jay was out for 96, Green Bay still hadn’t scored!
Extract from NSWCA Annual Report for 1997-98:
Bankstown Oval is now a real “home away from home” for the Sharks, and for Jason Holley in particular. For the third consecutive season, Holley starred in a premiership win at the ground. In 1995/96, he scored 67 in the club’s inaugural First Grade victory. In 1996/97, he took 6/65 in its Second Grade premiership win. And in 1997/98, his match-winning 96 gained him the Benaud Medal, awarded annually to the Player of the First Grade Final.

173 in 2nd Grade – 2009-10 (Joel Burnett captain)
Round 5 was against Manly at Manly Oval. At stumps on day one, we were well placed at 3/107 chasing 213. With Jaques and Smith returning to 1st Grade, someone had to come down to 2nds, and despite Perm volunteering to make the trek to Manly Oval, Jason Holley returned. Holley came to the crease early on day two and what followed was an awe-inspiring, brutal assault on the Manly bowlers, which could best be summed up as Vintage Holley. At one stage, the Manly legspinner was bowling around the wicket, pitching outside off and turning further away in an attempt to protect himself from the short boundary and another Holley maximum. Holley dealt with this by walking towards point and depositing the next delivery into the tennis courts. Jay finished with 173 from 107 balls, including 21 fours and 9 sixes.
Some details from the scorebook:
· Jason went in at 4/109 and was out at 8/343. He scored 14 fours & 9 sixes. He batted for 147 minutes and faced 110 balls.
· He shared a partnership of 143 for the 6th wicket with Kurt Brown (25) – Jason’s contribution was 114.

119 in 2nd Grade Qualifying Final – 2009-10 (Joel Burnett captain)
After losing just two matches all season, we managed to finish the minor premiership in second place. This earned us a home qualifying final at the conveniently located Joe McAleer Oval. As he had been promising to do all season, Burnett won the toss, and before you could say “Geez it’s quiet without Rowie”, the Sharks were having a bat. Things began poorly, with Williams dismissed for 3. Brown joined Pickering in the middle and the pair played well to add 73 before Pickering (39) was out just before lunch. We went to lunch at 2/93, and after the resumption Brown and Burnett continued to thwart the Rangers attack. The pair added 102 for the session without loss, and soon after tea Brown brought up his maiden grade century, a stellar 107. From there the Sharks went for the jugular, with Jason Holley racing to 74* at stumps, and the side a daunting 3/325.
With the game solidly in our favour, a continued batting display was the order of the day. Unfortunately, Burnett was out early for 88, but this only spurred Holley on, as he passed 100 unnoticed, but received a rousing ovation for his 102! That’ll teach him for scoring too quickly!! Murphy had a brief stay before Brockley joined Holley at the crease. Just as the fireworks began between these two, Jay was out for a magnificent 119 (116 balls). Marciante (51*) and Brockley then added 179 for the 7th wicket, with Brockley the star, also recording his maiden grade century, a brutal 151 (110 balls, 21 fours and 5 sixes). Upon Brockley’s dismissal we declared at 7/585, having broken the second grade highest team total for the second time this season, and also the highest team total in any grade by the Sharks.
Some details from the scorebook:
· Jason went in at 3/231 and was out at 6/406. He scored 19 fours & 2 sixes. He batted for 149 minutes and faced 116 balls.
· He shared a partnership of 106 for the 4th wicket with Joel Burnett (19) – Jason’s contribution was 83.
· Sutherland 7/585 dec (J.Brockley 151, J.Holley 119, K.Brown 107, J.Burnett 88, B.Marciante 51*) drew with Northern District 3/176 at Joe McAleer Oval.
