St George DCC In Between Balls with Tom Forrester

St George Cricket Club | October 24, 2025

Tom Forrester will perhaps be famously remembered by some as the guy that stood at the other end for the majority of Sam Konstas' monumental 795 runs on the way to a Green Shield premiership in the season of 2021-22. Some perhaps don't know that it was actually Tom that took out the player of the match in the hard fought final against Northern District.

Whilst Sam's rise was brisk and meteoric, Tom has quietly been going about his business at St George and was rewarded for some fantastic 2nd grade performances when he became St George DCC 1st Grade Player No.484 in Round 13 of the 2024-25 season.

Sadly it was a tough first day when Tom was dismissed for just 1. Taking a catch in the Mosman 1st innings meant that until his next first grade appearance, Tom had to settle for having the same amount of 1st Grade catches as 1st Grade runs. For 252 days that was Tom's 1st Grade story.

He rectified that situation in no uncertain terms when he was given his next opportunity, ironically against Mosman in Round 2 against the likes of Jack Nisbet and premiership winner, Jake Turner. Tom was dismissed for a wonderful knock of 86 from just 95 balls. Redemption was sweet as Tom now looks to consolidate his spot at the top of the St George 1st Grade batting order.

Let's find out a little more about the man himself as we go In between balls with.... Tom Forrester

What year you were born and where?

2005, Hurstville

Can you remember your first game of cricket? How old and do you remember how you went?

5 years old playing in my older brother’s team with Dad coaching. Can’t remember how we went.

Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey? Where you’ve played, clubs you’ve played for?

Played 10 years of junior cricket for St Christophers Cricket Club in the Bankstown District, 8 of which I played up in my brother’s team. Played junior reps with Bankstown, before I was lured to a Greenies trial at Saints by Matt Grealy. Saints journey began there.

What other sports do you play?

Bit of touch footy in the winter, played 10 years of rugby league which is my favourite sport to watch – I’m a diehard Doggies fan.

Highest levels in other sports played if applicable?

Best I can do here is probably a combined catholic schools touch team in primary school. My footy career was never going to take me too far.

Who is your favourite sports movie or documentary?

For movie I’d say Warrior. It’s a UFC movie which is not a sport I follow, but an unreal movie.

Who’s your favourite cricket commentator?

Ravi Shastri – he’s a big unit

What’s the one thing about you most people don’t know about?

I absolutely love music and spend a lot of my down time playing the guitar.

How many years did you play at St George?

Into my 6th season at Saints – feels like I just started

St George Nickname?

Had Suby for a while (Subaru Forester) but it’s never really stuck.

Highest Level Played (St George or Representative including Jnr Level)?

1st grade at Saints

What’s your highest score in senior cricket? For which club and where?

87 on my official grade debut in 5s. Been downhill from there.

Highest Score for St George?

89 in Greenies.

What has been your best bowling figures in senior cricket?

I had to research for this – 1/18. Enough said.

Can you tell us which players in the club we should be looking out for in terms of higher representative honours?

Will Taylor. Rare bloke but special talent.

Who has been the scariest bowler you have played against so far?

A guy called Ryan Freeman I played against in club cricket – was clocked at 128kph at 15. I was 13 at the time so it was pretty scary. Funny story, when we versed him that year my brother and I opened with the simple plan of seeing through his spell. My brother faced every single one of his four overs for four maidens and got out soon after for 3. I got my first ever 100.

Who has been the best spinner you have played against so far?

Not sure, too often I’m out before spin comes on. Never played against him but facing Raf MacMillan in the nets was always cool.

Who has been the best batsman you’ve played against?

Riley Kingsell. Had the pleasure of batting with him as well. He’ll play for Australia one day.

Who has been your funniest St George team mate?

Jimmy Brown, especially in combo with Llewellyn Wylie. Interesting characters to say the least, but have left me in stitches multiple times.

Who was your childhood hero?

Being a mad Doggies fan would have to say Josh Jackson.

Who are the three sports people in the world you’d most like to meet?

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Stephen Crichton

Name some St George players you admire most in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

I wish I could time the ball like Jarrod Brown. I’m very competitive myself (especially in warm-up touch) so love to see that in others as well. I’ve always admired the way Warky embraced the spirit of cricket – competes on every ball but manages to do it with a smile.

Greatest St George influence?

I consider myself so lucky with the men who’ve looked after me at St George, I think of blokes like Ben Panayotopoulos or Sohan Kumar to name a few, who are great players but more importantly gentlemen off the field. Always loved and looked up to Blake MacDonald when I started coming through the grades despite having a very different game to him.

What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

The blokes I get to share the field with, and the mental grind of the contest. I think that cricket is sports greatest reflection of life.

What didn’t you like?

Losing.

What did / do you enjoy most about playing at St George?

The mateship and the club culture this creates. So many great blokes who have looked after me on and off the field as I’ve journeyed through the grades.

What has been your most memorable moment in cricket?

Winning the Green Shield or making my 1s debut would be hard to go past

Favorite Saints Tradition?

Best team song in grade cricket. Getting to lead a verse is one of my all time favourite things to do.

Tell us about the best win you’ve been involved with?

Green Shield Final was pretty special. There was a lot of work that went into that and I was lucky enough to be out on the field for almost the whole game.

“Favorite” worst injury playing cricket?

Did my quad early last year whilst batting and got out for 63, so I like to say it cost me 100. Managed that injury and in my first game back at full health I did the exact same injury in my other quad!

Favorite Beverage?

I don’t drink alcohol so a nice cold Ginger Beer usually does the trick. To be fair I mostly just drink water.

Favorite Food?

Nice cold watermelon is hard to go past.

Favorite Holiday Destination?

Manyana down the South Coast. Go with the family for 2 weeks every year. Very special place

What are your hobbies?

Love to play and listen to music, or going to a Doggies game with the family

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Mum’s always told me to “choose kind” so I try my best to do that.

What did / do you do for a living?

I’m studying nursing at uni. Absolutely loving it.

Greatest achievement outside of cricket?

Boring one but probably completing the HSC. Worked pretty hard on it and it got me into the course I’m doing today.

If you were down to $10 how would you spend it?

All on red.

Advise to any youngsters looking to make it in the game?

Just have fun. Simple.
