St George First Grade Player No.86 - Percy Ford

Percy Ford began his career with St George as a 13-year-old teenager in the season of 1928-29 in our Poidevin Gray Shield side where he continued to play in that side until 1934-35.

He showed a great amount of potential as an allrounder. In 1933-34 he rose to third grade and took 34 wickets at 14.53 with his leg breaks. He eventually finished that season in second grade where he remained until the end of the 1936-37 season collecting 92 wickets all up.

He then progressed to first grade where he took a further 14 wickets at 27.64. Unfortunately for the club, Percy was forced to give away Grade Cricket due to work commitments, and in one of our old annual reports he was described as an excellent leg break bowler with potential to go higher. 

Percy resumed Cricket with the St George Cricket Association, and enjoyed many seasons in the park amongst his friends.

He lived at Kogarah for many years before moving to the Frank Vickery Village due to ill health. He was seen at Hurstville Oval in the latter years in his wheelchair, and continued his interest with the club up until the time of his passing. The eulogy at his funeral was delivered by Warren Saunders.
