Q: Banter, gamesmanship, or the term we tend to be most familiar with ‘sledging’ is part of cricket.

The exchange of words can be funny, classy, clever and at times hard edged, but it should never cross the boundaries of being personal or abusive.

So, to our question, what’s the best “sledge” you’ve heard or heard about on the cricket field?
A: I remember a third grade game at North Sydney No 2. I was playing for Mosman. A big, solidly built bloke named Pete Balcombe came in to bat and was hitting a few pretty brazen shots. I think Steve Jones was bowling. He decided the best way to upset Balcombe's rhythm was to have a go it him because of the significant size of his rear end. Balcombe didn't miss a beat. 'Take's a big hammer to drive a long nail, dickhead,' he said, and went on to hit 170 off what seemed like 60 balls. Well done, Jonesy.
