Cricket Insights with Rob Frew - New Zealand Over 50s cricket captain

Cricket Insights | February 09, 2026

15 February 2026, Australia and New Zealand’s Over 50s cricket teams will meet in Christchurch for the opening match of an historic series - three One Day Internationals and the first-ever Over 50s Test Match played over 3 days and playing for the Peter Solway and Adrian Dale Trophy.

We’re joined by Rob Frew, captain of New Zealand to discuss the series.

Key takeaway:

Leadership at international level does not have to be complicated. Rob Frew’s first instinct as captain is to keep things simple. Define roles, reduce noise, and let experience do the rest.

Whether it’s a one-day game or a three-day Test, the fundamentals do not change. Calm leadership, clarity of role, and trust in preparation allow players to adapt to new formats without overthinking.

Sometimes the best leadership move is resisting the urge to overcoach.
