CricConnect conversation with Jono Dean and Mark Higgs – why Cricket ACT is a genuine pathway for aspiring cricketers

In Australia, there are six first-class domestic cricket teams — Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia — as we know each cricket team has 11 players. Behind those teams and squads, every state also runs a 2nd XI program, and across the country, around 150 players are contracted either by Cricket Australia or their state.

Selection at any level of cricket is subjective — at the discretion of selectors — and while some players are given opportunities, others, unfortunately, can be overlooked. The simple reality is, we need more avenues for talented players to develop and showcase their skills.

That’s where the ACT comes in. While Canberra doesn’t have a first-class team, the ACT compete in the Australian 2nd XI competition — a national platform that can open doors for aspiring cricketers. For young players chasing their first-class dreams, ACT Cricket presents a genuine and exciting pathway.
