CricConnect Volunteer Recognition Series - Darcy Klemm – Mulgrave Cricket Club

Mulgrave Cricket Club | March 27, 2026

Some cricket journeys are straightforward. Darcy Klemm’s has taken a few turns, and that is what makes it meaningful.

After a difficult season in Western Australia, Darcy wasn’t even sure he wanted to keep playing. A move from Kalgoorlie to Darwin brought uncertainty, and cricket was no longer a priority. But wanting to meet people in a new place, he picked the game back up and joined Nightcliff, where he met coach Mick Hancock.

That relationship changed everything.

Mick transformed the way Darcy thought about cricket, and when the opportunity came to move to Melbourne and play at Mulgrave, it felt like the right step.

From the moment he arrived, Darcy felt welcomed. That sense of belonging has been a constant across his three seasons at the club.

For Darcy, cricket is about more than performance. It is about connection, shared experiences and testing yourself. It is a game that challenges you mentally, physically and emotionally, where one mistake can mean waiting weeks for another opportunity. That is what builds resilience.

That resilience was tested again in July 2024 when Darcy broke his hip playing Australian Rules. Unsure what level he would return to, he worked his way back through the lower grades before re-establishing himself in the 2nd XI in 2025/26.

That season, he scored 276 runs, took 23 dismissals behind the stumps and helped secure a premiership.

It was a return built on persistence and a genuine love for the game.

While his playing journey is strong, Darcy’s contribution off the field stands out just as much.

At 19, he coached an under-14 side in Western Australia to a premiership, stayed with that group into under-17s, and stepped into the role of junior coordinator, helping run programs and represent the club.

At Mulgrave, that involvement has continued to grow.

From helping with Woolworths Blasters in his first season, to co-running the program, and now coordinating it himself, Darcy has played a key role in connecting junior and senior players. In 2025/26, he also coached the under-13 side to a premiership, losing just one game for the year.

Across three seasons, he has been part of four premierships, as a player, coach and contributor.

When asked about his favourite Mulgrave player, Darcy points to James “Spider” Morris. Not just for his ability, but for the way he approaches the game. A reliable and consistent cricketer who can always be trusted to play his role.

Growing up, Darcy admired Michael Hussey, particularly his cover drive. More recently, Alex Carey stands out for his wicketkeeping, competitiveness and willingness to embrace the contest.

For Darcy, Mulgrave Cricket Club represents something simple but powerful.

It is a place built on competitiveness, but also on inclusivity. A place where people are welcomed, supported and given the opportunity to improve.

A place where you can belong.
