Valley District Cricket Club is a cricket club playing in the Bulls Masters premiership, the leading club cricket competition in Queensland, Australia. The club was established on 16 August 1897 and is one of only four remaining foundation clubs (along with South Brisbane, Redlands and Toombul). They have historically been located in the inner Brisbane suburb of Fortitude Valley and now play home matches at the Ashgrove Sportsground Park. Australian Test cricketers to play for the Valley club include Matthew Hayden, Allan Border, Don Tallon, Kepler Wessels, Usman Khawaja, Stuart Law and England wicket-keeper Geraint Jones OBE (in third grade). Notable Queenslanders to play for Valley include Leo OConnor (cricketer), Roy Levy, Otto Nothling, Malcolm Francke, Joe Dawes, Geoff Foley, Lee Carseldine and Luke Feldman. Current contracted Queensland Bulls players are Usman Khawaja, Lachlan Pfeffer, Mark Steketee and Jack Wildermuth, along with Queensland Fire players Mikayla Hinkley, Georgia Prestwidge and Charli Knott Valley is the largest club in Australia in player numbers and is believed to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest cricket club in the world; it currently (2019/20 season) has over 1,300 junior players, 200 senior players, including 180 female players.

Q: Chris Lanagan made his first-grade debut for Valley District Cricket Club in 19894-95 and is the proud owner of first grade cap number 621.

A right arm swing bowler Chris took 210 first grade wickets at an average of 24.24. He took 138 wickets at 27.16 in two-day cricket and 72 wickets at 18.65 in one day cricket.

In all formats Chris took 395 wickets for Valley DCC.

Chris plays veterans’ cricket in Queensland and was a member of the successful Queensland team that won the Over 50s Division One national Championships in Melbourne in December 2023.

4 Test players and a further 10 first class players were on show in the 1984/85 Brisbane First Grade grand final between Valley and Northern Suburbs but it was Valleys big man Paul "Lurch" Lewis who proved the difference taking 5 for 44 in Norths' first innings 199.

Steve Monty and Brett Henschell were the only players to score fifties in a low scoring affair with Valleys ultimately winning by 7 wickets.

Q: Shane Kabel is the proud owner of Valley District Cricket Club first grade player number 678 having made his debut during the 2008/09 season.

Shane is a one club player having joined Valley as a junior and is a first grade premiership winning player.

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

Without a doubt Usman Khawaja in the 2013/14 grand final. He came in 3rd ball of the innings and went on to score 130 odd and made it look so easy.

Q: On the 20th and 27th February 1999 Valley District Cricket Club First Grade team played Beenleigh Logan Cricket Club in Round 11 of the Brisbane Grade Cricket Competition.

The game is known as JH Dawes 10 wickets.

Despite being bowled out for 189 Valley won the game by an innings and 95 runs.

Former Queensland fast bowler Joe Dawes match figures for Valley – 25.1 overs, 11 maidens, 16 wickets, 33 runs.

Dawes 2nd innings bowling – 16.4 overs, 8 maidens, 10 wickets, 18 runs.

Q: Peter Drinnen is the Director of Coaching at Valley District Cricket Club

In a decorated playing career Peter played 5 first class games and 3 one day games for Queensland and is the proud owner of Valley first grade cap number 588 after making his debut for the club in 1989/90.

Peter had previously played first grade cricket in Brisbane Grade Cricket for South Brisbane.

From Bundaberg in Queensland Peter played Under 16s and 19s for Queensland and represented Queensland Country at the National Country Championships before moving to Brisbane.

Peter was also part of the inaugural intake to the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide in 1988.

As a cricket coach, Peter has excelled and continues to make a tremendous contribution to the game. He’s a highly regarded Level 3 cricket coach, operates his own coaching business and coach Scotland to the 2007 World Cup and The Netherlands to the 2001 World Cup
