Q: NSW Media XI v Queensland Media XI – 1987 at the Gabba.
In 1987 I had the good fortune to play in the NSW Media XI v Queensland Media XI cricket game at the Gabba in Brisbane.
The game featured the cream of the journalistic sports world including David Morrow, Gordon Bray, Jim Maxwell, Peter Meares, Phil Wilkins, David Fordham, Jim Tucker, Gerry Collins, Collins as well as Les Johns and many others

question
Q: Vale Tony Corcoran
I first met Tony when I arrived in Dubbo as a first year out secondary teacher at Dubbo South High in 1974
South High also had a team in the Whitney Cup which was made up of Lloyd Keir and myself and the rest being school kids such as Wayne Munro, Mark Ferguson, Steve Wheeler and the Allan twins.
Tony was one of those classy left-handers who played the good ball on its merits and dispatched the bad ball to the boundary. He was always immaculately dressed, and his cricket was reflective of this.
He moved to Glen Innes where he was well known in the Stock and Station industry and later became Head of Elders - at some stage Tony also played for University in the Brisbane grade competition.

Q: The beauty of the Tooheys Cup - Wagga Wagga v Albury
Can you imagine half the Australian Test cricket team playing an exhibition game in the county regions a week before the first Ashes Test? Well, it happened in the 1990s thanks to the magic of the Tooheys Cup!
As a cricket mad kid growing up in Wagga Wagga, there was nothing like the thrill of when the Tooheys Cup rolled into town. The concept saw the full strength NSW Sheffield Shield Team play an exhibition match between two local towns (in my case Wagga vs Albury), with 6 shield players on each side intertwined with 5 of the best local players from each town.
A brilliant concept that gave the bush boys a chance to pit their skills against cricketing royalty and a chance for all country cricket lovers to see their heroes in the flesh. A legitimate match where the lads went hard.

A: Played in a few of those games in Dubbo and Lismore - they were great fun and provided a highlight for all country cricketers and spectators alike - sorely missed in the bush nowadays

Q: Frogan's Cricket tales
I first started when I went to grade in 1968 going down before cricket started at Chatswood Oval for the Saturday Morning Coaching Classes run by Clyde Coltman and from then on it remained a passion for the next 40 years. I remained on the committee at West Pymble and coached their U/16’s and then Brian Taber suggested I sit for my level 1 Coaching Certificate.
After finishing Art School in 1972 I took up a Teachers College Scholarship at Sydney Teachers College majoring in Art and Health Education.
I went and saw Brian Booth the Head of PE and he suggested I take cricket in second semester. I turned up for the 1st class and sat in the front row. Brian spoke about what we were going to do and then said this half goes with me and the other half go with Graham pointing to me. He had not said a word so I think Brian Taber and him got together and my coaching journey was off and running.

Q: A game for Bickley Park 3rd X1 which comprised the opening bat aged 56 (the man with no back lift) the opening bowler 54 (the man with no run up), Chris Sheerin (Captain Magic/Tragic), myself and 7 under 14 and16 year old's.
We batted first and scored a paltry 72. The opposition were cruising at 1 for 30 and I thought something need to change. The man with no run up took a wicket and in came “man mountain” - looks like the game is all over.
I bowled 3 balls to him, and he did not lay bat on ball, so I went to the non-striker borrowed his bat and took it down to the other batsman and said here tape these two together and you might have a chance of hitting the bloody ball. I bowled him the next ball, took a hat trick and ended up with 7 for 29 and they were all out 54… game over.
The opposition ran onto the field, and all congratulated me as did the umpire who bought me the first pint and after a few more the ump drove me back to Bickley Park for a couple of pints with the lads.
